WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator John Barrasso from Wyoming has strongly criticized President Biden's decision to halt new American liquefied natural gas (LNG) export approvals. During a hearing in the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources (ENR), Senator Barrasso expressed concerns about the potential impact of this decision on America's energy security.
Senator Barrasso pointed out that countries like Russia, Iran, and Qatar are currently leading in natural gas reserves, with Russia expanding its LNG export capacity and Iran developing its own. He warned that these nations would be eager to displace the United States as a major player in the global LNG market. "I think each would love nothing more than to displace America on the world's LNG market," Senator Barrasso stated.
Deputy Secretary Turk, during the hearing, acknowledged that it is in America's best interest for the world to buy LNG from the United States rather than from Russia or Iran. However, the decision to halt new LNG export approvals will likely result in increased Russian and Iranian natural gas exports at the expense of American natural gas.
In a subsequent press conference, Senator Barrasso criticized President Biden's decision, claiming that it was driven by a desire to cater to climate extremists. He stated, "The President is so panicked by his terrible poll numbers that he has surrendered America's energy policy to the climate extremists who are now calling the energy shots for this administration." Senator Barrasso expressed concern that this decision would make the United States an unreliable partner to its allies and empower countries like Russia and Iran.
Furthermore, Senator Barrasso highlighted the importance of the natural gas industry in Wyoming and its contribution to education initiatives within the state. He explained that the revenue generated by the industry has helped fund education programs such as the Hathaway Scholarship, providing opportunities for students to further their education. Despite the administration's decision, Senator Barrasso vowed to continue supporting the natural gas industry in Wyoming and ensuring that the state benefits from its energy production.
Senator Barrasso's remarks serve as a strong criticism of President Biden's decision to halt new LNG export approvals. The concerns raised regarding the potential consequences on America's energy security and the impact on states like Wyoming highlight the ongoing debate surrounding the country's energy policies.
